How did he install an OS on it?
http://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=976 will get you a pre-burned cd. Openbsd sells cds as well. Of course, you wouldn’t be able to update anything, but since you never hook it up to the internet, and only use it for a very restricted purpose, it wouldn’t matter.
I’m glad someone still sells CDs.
Better take the wifi card out to be sure.
If all you were doing was encrypting and decrypting documents, and perhaps some associated tasks, seems like you could use a raspberry pi — they don’t have wireless. In fact, someone could produce a minimal distro for the pi that was for precisely this purpose, like the “onion pi” that is a tor node. Have to think about it some more 🙂
