Recuerdos de la Alhambra

The other day I went on a youtube search for “Recuerdos de la Alhambra”. This was the best version I found…

  1. Sultan Saini That Segovia recording was one of the first CDs I bought, back when CDs first became available 🙂 (I might actually also have it on LP, but I haven’t looked at the LPs in my garage for a very long time.)

I still think I prefer Ms Park’s rendition, though. For a guitarist she has unusually tiny hands — Segovia had hands like hams swinging at the end of his arms. I saw him perform at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, many years ago. It was full (3000+ people), and he didn’t use amplification. The crowd was still, though, and I could hear him OK, though the sound was far away.

Incidentally, I went on this youtube search because I heard a version on the radio that really caught my attention because the performer left out many of the ornaments in the tremolo melody, and it sounded great that way. I didn’t find out who the player was. So many great young guitarists these days…
